From the Office of the Decatur County Attorney Lisa Hynden Jeanes:
February 17, 2021
On Monday, February 15th at approximately 11:59 a.m. the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department and the Decatur County Attorney learned of the tragic death of a dog in Davis City. Despite what has been reported by the news and posted on social media, an investigation into the cause of death of the dog was immediately initiated and is ongoing. Two other dogs located at the home were not removed because there was no indication that they had been mistreated, neglected, or malnourished. They had access to food, water, and appropriate shelter. However, the owner of the dogs has since voluntarily turned them over to another party. An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death. Under Iowa Code §717B.3 a person who commits animal neglect resulting in the death of said animal is guilty of an aggravated misdemeanor. The serious nature of the offense warrants a thorough and complete investigation. Additional information will be released when the investigation is complete.
